West Wight Heritage Centre

What a great day, the Heritage signs are being installed.

The team have worked hard packing and un-packing, ably helped by Mark and Daz who you see now installing the new signs.

These lads worked hard moving all our filing cabinets and box after box of documents.

We could have not done without their help. Thank you, Lads.

It’s a new era for Freshwater and Totland Archive Group who will be able to share all the wonderful archive material that has been generously donated, revealing all aspects of village life.

The long-awaited home of our own has arrived! Yes, at long last we have a permanent venue for our wonderful collection of documents, photographs, maps and other documents. It will also mean that we can welcome people into the Centre, perhaps to view displays or chat over a cup of tea about times gone by.

Our new home is WEST WIGHT HERITAGE CENTRE Avenue Road, Freshwater (formerly Vectis Vapes and before that West Wight Chiropractic Clinic). This has been made possible by the generosity of Freshwater Parish Council. It is a superb location, being right in the middle of Freshwater village. You can’t miss it!

Our Chairman, Linda Barnes, has worked extremely hard to liaise with the F.P.C. and to organise the furnishing of the building. It is planned to open the Centre on Tuesday 1st September and we are fortunate to have acquired the services of the Isle of Wight Lord Lieutenant, Susie Sheldon, to perform the ceremony at 12 noon. The first display, in our new abode, covers photographs and advertisements about shops from the past, and is entitled ‘Shops of Yesteryear’. It will be available to view on the opening day and throughout the month of September during the Centre’s opening hours.

The display includes numerous black and white and colour photographs and related documents, about local shops from the past, covering Freshwater Bay, Totland and Freshwater.

Please visit our Centre and support this long-awaited facility.

Please be aware that we must limit the number of visitors that come into the Centre at one time, due to the Covid-19 guidelines that are in place during the pandemic. Thank you.

We look forward to greeting you!
